August 17-September 27, 2009 - Back to School New Orleans

Operation Kids is teaming up with New Orleans Outreach, one of the organizations we worked with during the "Operation Kids: Rebuilding Dreams in New Orleans" campaign on a Back to School in New Orleans campaign, set to launch mid-August. The goal of this project is to increase access to New Orleans Outreach programs among students in New Orleans, where there is such a critical need.

In 2008-2009, New Orleans Outreach utilized more than 700 volunteers and served more than 2000 children. Those children enrolled in Outreach’s programs scored, on average:
• 27 points higher on standardized math tests than students not enrolled in the programs
• 24 points higher on standardized English tests than students not enrolled in the programs

The same kids had significantly higher school attendance rates. Even before Hurricane Katrina, the state of New Orleans Public Education was shocking – programs like New Orleans Outreach are showing they can make an enormous difference.
