Lusher Charter School
About the Organization:
Lusher Charter School is a K-12 public school located in uptown New Orleans and operated by the non-profit Advocates for Arts-Based Education Corporation. Lusher focuses on a high-academic college-preparatory curriculum, with early college credit classes through Tulane University, gifted/talented programs, Advanced Placement courses, and academic challenges in every classroom. Additionally, the school incorporates the arts throughout the curriculum with comprehensive arts education (CAE) and an award-winning performing arts program in creative writing, dance, drama, music, and visual arts. Lusher offers a strong athletic program and numerous other extracurricular opportunities.
Substantial damage was caused by Katrina, but extensive restoration by a dedicated group of administrators, teachers, parents and supporters made the building usable. However, many of its facilities are still in need of major repair.

Weight Room
Project Description and Status:
Because Lusher reopened in an older facility that was closed at the time of Hurricane Katrina, student-athletes at the school had no access to workout facilities of any kind. As a result, the Operation Kids campaign contributed $38,000 for the construction of an on-campus weight room. That project was completed in November 2007.
Project Cost:
$38,000
Funds Still Needed:
This project is fully funded and completed.
