Lusher Charter School
About the Organization:
Lusher Charter School is a K-12 public school located in uptown New Orleans and operated by the non-profit Advocates for Arts-Based Education Corporation. Lusher focuses on a high-academic college-preparatory curriculum, with early college credit classes through Tulane University, gifted/talented programs, Advanced Placement courses, and academic challenges in every classroom. Additionally, the school incorporates the arts throughout the curriculum with comprehensive arts education (CAE) and an award-winning performing arts program in creative writing, dance, drama, music, and visual arts. Lusher offers a strong athletic program and numerous other extracurricular opportunities.
Substantial damage was caused by Katrina, but extensive restoration by a dedicated group of administrators, teachers, parents and supporters made the building usable. However, many of its facilities are still in need of major repair.

Project Description and Status:
With funding from the Operation Kids campaign, Lusher’s athletic field has been completely renovated into a quality venue for football, soccer and track. The new “Brees Family Field” will be dedicated in early September 2009. The field will be used not only by Lusher Charter School games, but by surrounding schools and local recreational organizations as well.
