Giving Smarter
There continues to be a lot of talk about the economy and the challenges ahead. We note with special interest, the impact it is having on charities across the country. There is no doubt that donations are reducing and charities are being forced to reassess themselves. Unfortunately, some may not survive, all at a time when need is rising.
The Operation Kids’ managed giving concept has become even more important in the current climate. The fact is, if you are giving less this year than in previous years, it matters even more how each and every dollar is used. This concept is at the heart of managed giving, which you will read more about in this month's article about giving smarter.
It may be that when all is said and done and we have collectively weathered this economic storm we all may have learned something valuable about giving.
Generosity has never been the issue; Americans’ donations have topped $300 billion on an annual basis over the last several years. We as a culture have always given to those in need and we likely always will. Even if amounts are down temporarily, they will rise again in the coming better days.
The issue has been efficient use of those donations. How can so much money, still leave so much need? At Operation Kids, we are aware of individual donors and large private foundations who find themselves asking, "What have we accomplished through all of our giving over the years?" In far too many cases, there is no clear answer to that question, and that is unacceptable.
While no well meaning person would ever "wish" the current economic challenges on anyone, we can at least learn something from the trials and make use of lessons learned. I would hope that if donors learn something about giving, it is that you should expect more of your giving, and from those organizations who accept your gifts. As donors, we should expect accountability, results and measurably improved lives. That is what managed giving is all about. We are seeing donors everywhere beginning to understand the need for more thoughtful and more efficient giving.
In these difficult times, if you can give, please do – the need only increases in times like this and there are those who need assistance now more than ever. But ask the hard questions of the charity you intend to support. If you would like some professional advice along the way, that is why we are here. You only have to ask.
