Norman H. Bangerter


Norman H. Bangerter, Board of TrusteesNorman H. (Norm) Bangerter served as governor of Utah from 1985 to 1993. He was the thirteenth governor of the state, and the first Republican elected to the position since 1965.

During Governor Bangerter’s eight year tenure in office, Financial World rated Utah in first place (or no lower than fifth place) as the best managed state in the nation.

The Bangerter Highway (Utah State Road 154), which opened in 1998, was named after the former governor, who had long supported such a road.

Norm served as chairman of the Western Governors Association and on the executive committee of the National Governors Association.

Prior to his election, Norm founded a successful real estate construction firm that specialized in building homes. He also served in the Utah House of Representatives from 1975 to 1985, and as Speaker of the House from 1981 to 1985.

After his retirement as governor, Norm returned to his real estate construction firm. He also served from 1996 to 1999 as a mission president in South Africa for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). He was the chairman of the board of the Utah College of Applied Technology from 2001 to 2006.

Norm attended Brigham Young University and the University of Utah.
